Scriptographer was used to produce a limited edition of posters for the Swiss artist Philippe Decrauzat.
The effect is inspired by the 3D type on the «Faust» record sleve «The faust Tapes» from 1973.
Programming and design by Jürg Lehni. Due to the Philippe Decrauzat's decision, the script is not going to be shared here.

Jegp, I have made my point clear here before, but it seems it is time to sum it up nicely. Apologies for not writing earlier, Unfortunately the past weeks have been too busy for me to follow this discussion here.

Faust.js was a script commissioned by artist Philippe Decrauzat for use in his own work, and it was his decision to not release the script, or at least not yet, until his work with it is done. I do not agree that I can only show here what is also open in source. The gallery is about showing uses of Scriptographer, wether they are open or not, to inspire people to make new work, not copy it. It is also not about showing people what htey can do with Scriptographer by simply downloading it and using existing scripts.

Wether done with an open tool or not should not make a difference. You can always tell yourself you need something you saw somewhere too, then imitate and copy if you are uninspired, as opposed to thinking it further and making something new instead.

You could also walk into an exhibition, see the printed artwork and tell yourself the same. But hey, that would be plagiarism, and not so nice now, would it?

I am obviously a fan of open source and sharing of scripts, at least where it makes sense and can work. I am also of a fan of courtesy and respect for work where it cannot be shared, for whatever reason. I don't think open source means that everything needs to be open and shared, there to be picked and used by everyone. The result of that would be an immediate deflation in value of anything release, since everyone can just take it and repeat the same.

Now I can obviously not stop you from releasing your version of the script, if you really have to. And it seemed you had to, but I am not going to point anyone there. So how about properly mentioning the original work and the full names of people involved? Is that what you meant by 'openness culture', and how ideas about it differ?

This all makes me wonder, what exactly are you trying to achieve? Free the world from this crazy programmer who decided not to release the script? Give Faust.js to the masses? Prove that you can do it? Prove that Processing is as good as Scriptographer? (Mind you, you could also write it in C++) Prove that you can do it? Make me release the original script? Make me remove the Afternow example from the gallery?

I am not really getting it. Could you please explain your motivations?

Jurg,

I will not start here a debate of what is original art or what is based on something else. In my opinion everything is based on remix and deviations and variations. The cocktail is what defines the new flavor. Sometimes the mix is new depending on the eye of the observer, or a twist on a technique is considered innovative. I do agree with you that not all should be open source. Like I said before showcasing what scriptographer can do in a gallery that contains a mix of works product of scripts available and other not available can be confusing.

I appreciate your work and I have credited sources full names on your request, you had a chance to discuss here earlier and if you wished I would have not posted, that was easy to do. If you feel that I should remove the script just ask. (Out of courtesy I waited almost 2 months before releasing the script for you to reply).

For me the motivation is not sharing the script with the world, nor to make you feel uncomfortable but instead was more to create own methods to achieve a expected result. I do not take credit for anything else than creating something with Processing that was not there before (that I am aware of). In that process I learn something, and if my learning can ease up someoneelse's learning path, great then.

i concur with Zinc, just do it in 3d. a little bit harder but not excessively time consuming.

In response to Lehni..

"I do not agree that I can only show here what is also open in source."

Totally agree with you. The output is amazing and inspiring. It's fantastic that you've shared your work here for those reasons alone, the code is not necessary.
